Banned in the fifties, La Tomatina is the world’s largest tomato fight. Huge trucks pass through the streets arming revellers with squidgy missiles during the August event. When the local authorities stepped in to ban it, a mock funeral was held by locals to mourn the much-missed festivity. Local legend says it began in 1945 when a local man flew into a rage and hurled ripened red fruits at his friends. And a tradition was born! - How Long?
Barcelona’s impressive La Sagrada Familia cathedral began work in March 1882. The famous Spanish architect Gaudi took over the construction in 1883 and dedicated the rest of his life to the project. When Gaudi died (he was buried in the crypt) the construction was only a quarter of the way through and his ever-changing plans still not completed. Work was further interrupted between 1936 and 1939 by the Spanish Civil War. It still isn’t complete but is expected to finally be finished in 2026.
