    7 Fascinating/Weird Spain Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Que?
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world after Chinese, with more native speakers. Over 500,000 people are believed to have Spanish as their first language and it is the official language of 20 countries, mostly in South America. Though not official languages,
Aranese, Basque, Catalan and Galician are also widely spoken in some Spanish regions.
    2. La Tomatina
Banned in the fifties, La Tomatina is the world’s largest tomato fight. Huge trucks pass through the streets arming revellers with squidgy missiles during the August event. When the local authorities stepped in to ban it, a mock funeral was held by locals to mourn the much-missed festivity. Local legend says it began in 1945 when a local man flew into a rage and hurled ripened red fruits at his friends. And a tradition was born!
    3. How Long?
Barcelona’s impressive La Sagrada Familia cathedral began work in March 1882. The famous Spanish architect Gaudi took over the construction in 1883 and dedicated the rest of his life to the project. When Gaudi died (he was buried in the crypt) the construction was only a quarter of the way through and his ever-changing plans still not completed. Work was further interrupted between 1936 and 1939 by the Spanish Civil War. It still isn’t complete but is expected to finally be finished in 2026. By comparison, it only took 20 years to build the Pyramids!
    4. Hola!
Hello! magazine started in Spain in 1944. Now much loved around the world and giving readers a peak into the lives and homes of the rich and famous, Hola! became Hello! In 1988. Other inventions Spain has given the world include; the mop, space suits, hot chocolate, berets, sherry, classical guitars, cable cars, electric submarines and wheelchairs.
    5. Long Live The King
Spain is one of the few countries in the world to have a constitutional monarchy, meaning the King is the official ruler, although in modern times the Spanish parliament Cortes Generales does most of the decision making. It’s also one of only four countries to have a completely instrumental national anthem, making it very hard to sing-along!
    6. Bond, Juan Bond
Spain remained officially neutral in both World Wars. Under the rule of General Franco, Spain was politically aligned with Nazi Germany and at one point Franco offered military support to Hitler. However huge numbers of Spaniards worked and even fought for the Allies. Spain had its own 007, Joan Pujol Garcia was awarded the 2nd Class Iron Cross from the Nazis. Codenamed ‘Garbo’ by the British he was a double agent who also received an MBE.
    7. How Novel
The world’s first novel is accredited to Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes. Don Quixote was written in 1605 and has been translated into over 50 languages. The tale tells Don Quixote, a man of La Mancha and an hidalgo (“Son of Someone”), a low form of nobleman, who having read so many romantic chivalries, sets out to become a knight with the help of his servant Sancho Panza.
