    7 Fascinating/Weird France Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Le Grand Dame
Sports loving France is the largest country in the EU and covers a total area of 551,695 kilometres². That’s 6,033,409 football pitches, or 2,115,719,435 tennis courts.
    2. Hidden Meaning
The word ‘camouflage’ derives from the French verb meaning ‘to make up for the stage’. In 1915, theatrical artists known as camofleurs were employed to paint guns and vehicles to create the world’s first camouflaged army unit.
    3. La Musée
The Louvre in Paris is the most visited museum in the world, welcoming over 9,000,000 visitors a year. Covering a whopping 60,600 square (under our new system that’s 232,397,606 tennis courts – you’re welcome!) it houses 38,000 works of art and artifacts. It was originally the home of the French Royal Family until 1682 when Louis XIV moved the royal residence to Versailles. And yes, we think he would’ve used Rainbow Removals if we’d been around then!
    4. Mrs Eiffel
In April 2007, a woman married the Eiffel Tower. Erika LaBrie, a former US soldier and world champion archer, had a ceremony to make her marriage ‘official’ and changed her name to Erika La Tour Eiffel. She had a history of “object fetishism” having had a previous crush on the Berlin Wall which inspired a theatrical musical, Erika’s Wall.
    5. A Bit Hollywood
Forget the latest star-studded movie premier (another French word), the first ever public screening of a movie on took place in France in December 28th, 1895. La sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière (Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory) was made by Auguste and Louis Lumière whose factory and its workers made photographic equipment.
    6. Old Boney
Before he met his Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte actually did a great deal of good. He revolutionised the French legal system that is still widely based on the principles set down in Napoleon’s Code Civil. This put forward the principles of civil liberty and the equality of men before the law (in itself partly based on the British Magna Carter). He oversaw the adoption of the metric system in a country that had different regional units of weight and measurement. He built public roads and sewers and created state-supported secondary education. Sadly, he also started wars that led to the deaths of over 3.5 millions people.
    7. Inventive
Inventions that France have given the world include; pencil sharpeners, photography, hot air balloons, moving pictures, the stethoscope, braille, aspirin, parachutes and hairdryers. They didn’t invent the croissant, the kipferl was actually invented in Vienna, Austria in the 13th century. The French adopted and the perfected the soft breaded bundles of happiness and turned it into the delicious much loved daily staple.
